Travel Journal: New Zealand, Part 2

Part Two: South to the East to the North of the South Island

From Invercargill to Dunedin to Christchurch to Picton, what a time to be alive.

After the beauty of Queenstown and our days before, we were a bit disappointed with Invercargill. It's beautiful in it's own way down there at the bottom, but I'll admit to you, we went to see Aladdin in theaters. Sue us. In Dunedin, we saw albatross and the most beautiful sunrise. Christchurch blessed us with 360 degree views and perfect weather. Tossed in there were some sights of bouldered beaches, three sperm whales, and a castle.

Check it out:

Some fun facts about the THREE sperm whales we saw (yes we are special, we saw THREE and the cruises usually see two on an outing):

  • Sperm whales have the largest brain of any animal – up to 9kgs in weight

  • Kaikoura is one of the few places in the world where Sperm Whales can be seen year-round and close to shore -they at the top of this food chain and the abundance of fish ensures they make the waters of Kaikoura their home

  • Kaikoura plays host to the male sperm whales only, with the females and the young whales found in the warmer tropical waters

  • The sperm whale is thought to be one of the world’s loudest animal - it has been recorded at 230 decibels
